Where the time actually goes
The single most useful review on this site is a timetable. Andrew, on the catamaran trip:
“35 mins at Stingray City, 25 mins at Coral Gardens and 25 mins at Starfish Point were ample time to take photos, explore and enjoy the area.”
Add those up: 85 minutes at three stops. The trip is billed at 3 to 3.5 hours, which is 180 to 210 minutes. So roughly half the advertised duration is the North Sound crossing, the briefing, getting in and out of the water and getting back. That is not a complaint. It is the shape of a boat trip, and it is worth knowing before you compare a 2.5-hour trip against a 4.5-hour one and assume the longer one gives you nearly twice as long in the water.
Andrew’s numbers come from one trip on one boat and no operator promises them. Treat them as a shape, not a schedule.
If you are on a cruise ship
George Town has no cruise pier. Ships anchor offshore and passengers come ashore by tender. Two consequences follow and both cost time: the hours you actually get ashore are fewer than the itinerary implies, and a call can be cancelled outright in a swell.
I cannot tell you how long the tender takes. No source I have publishes it, so I am not going to put a number on it, and I am not going to tell you whether ship-sold excursions board earlier either. What I can tell you is that the margin has to come off your own plan rather than the operator’s clock. If your ship gives you six hours ashore, a 4.5-hour trip is a tight fit once the tender sits at both ends of it. A 2.5 or 3-hour trip is not.

If you are staying on the island
The constraint disappears. A 4.5-hour charter is a morning, and the 4-stop trip at 4.5 hours is the longest shared option here. The trade then is not time against the ship, it is time against group size, which is a money question rather than a clock question. That sum is on shared boat or private charter.
