How you get ashore

George Town is a tender port. Ships anchor offshore and tenders bring passengers in to South Terminal, North Terminal or Royal Watler Terminal. No excursion booking is required to use them. Two consequences worth planning around: your hours ashore are fewer than the itinerary suggests, and a call can be cancelled outright in a swell. Detail on the cruise port page.

The beach is public, and that is a legal fact rather than a courtesy

Seven Mile Beach is public property. You may walk its full length regardless of where you are staying, and no resort frontage changes that. It is also not seven miles: a generous measurement puts it a bit over 6.3 miles, or 10.1 km, and a realistic figure for the uninterrupted sandy stretch is about six miles.

Snorkelling is noted near the Marriott, near Government House, and north of the Seven Mile Public Beach area. If you have brought your own mask, that is a free afternoon with no operator involved.

One thing to expect: the beach has been eroding. Hurricane Helene in 2024 left hardly any sand left in some places, and in August 2025 the Grand Cayman Marriott announced a plan to place 8,000 cubic yards of sand to restore its shoreline. The full account is on the Seven Mile Beach page.

Getting there, and the number I will not print

Cruise Critic puts Seven Mile Beach at about ten minutes from the terminals by vehicle. That is a driving time from the source and I am not converting it into a walking time.

The cheap way is the bus: CI$2 typically, which is US$2.40, running 6:00am to 7:00pm Monday to Saturday out of the depot at 68 Edward Street in George Town, with routes marked by a number in a coloured circle. Beyond Hutland Road, towards Rum Point and Cayman Kai, the fare rises to as much as CI$5, or US$6.00. And it does not run at all on Sundays or public holidays, which is exactly when a lot of ships are in. Getting around has the rest.

Taxis are the other option, and they are not metered. They work on a dispatch basis with rates set from an approved fare table. I do not have that table, so this site prints no taxi fare in either currency. Agree a price before you get in, and agree which dollar you mean.

What a free day still costs you

Nothing about walking off a tender is free once you buy a drink. The Cayman Islands dollar is pegged at CI$1 = US$1.20, and prices ashore are routinely written with a bare dollar sign. Shops, hotels and restaurants take US dollars at CI$0.80 to the US dollar against a peg implying CI$0.8333, so paying US cash costs about 4%. Reading a CI$ price as a US$ price costs 20%. Change from a US-dollar payment usually comes back in Cayman dollars. What you cannot do from the shore

Stingray City is at roughly 19.3757°N, 81.3048°W, in the North Sound, just inside a natural channel through the barrier reef. There is no walking to it and no shore access. The sandbar where visitors stand in about three feet of water, and the deeper site of the same name used for scuba diving, both need a boat. If the rays are the reason you picked Grand Cayman, the free day does not include them.

That is the honest boundary of this page. Everything else here you can do on foot with the money in your pocket. For the sandbar, the shortest trip on this site runs 2.5 hours and the catamaran runs 3 to 3.5, which is what fits a tender call.
